Abstract
Microbiota is a collective term for the microorganisms that live in certain habitats including human body and an emerging view is that gut microbiota plays significant roles in regulating host physiology and it could serve as a surrogate means of assessing individual’s disease and health outcomes. Here we report that a dual-specificity phosphatase 6 (Dusp6)-deficient mouse strain harbors dysbiosis–resistant gut/fecal microbiota. We further show that Dusp6-deficiency is a novel host genetic factor that could modulate gut barrier integrity and our multi-omic study provides some hints on how this host-gut-microbiome relationship could be potentially used as complex yet novel biomarkers in selecting fecal microbiota transplantation donors or stratifying patients into responders and non-responders before health-care interventions. In summary, microbiome is the new frontier of personalized medicine treat and prevent diseases with maximized benefit and minimized damage to the individual level.
