Abstract

Information technologies have blended into our everyday life, for example, the booming Internet of Things. Some of the IoTs become ubiquitous and invisible; however, many of them inherit the appearance and function of a daily object with additional computational and internet capabilities. While we interact with this new genre of everyday "things," do we enjoy using them?

In this talk, I will present a critical analysis of a pioneering IoT product, the Nabaztag rabbit. Back to early 2000, it has received a lot of attention from general users, researchers, and developers of ubiquitous computing and internet applications. Unfortunately, the product did not continue. I do not have a verdict for the business success or failure of Nabaztag; instead, I performed interaction criticism as a design research method to analyze the interactive experience. I describe my 12 months engagement with this product: from being an excited new user, feeling confused by the functions and product identities, to abandoning the use entirely. This critical analysis might provide you some insights to design next generation of information technologies and applications.

Bio

Dr. Chung-Ching Huang began his career in interaction design from 2000. He researched and designed for web service platform, home entertainment consumer products, car GPS, and voice navigation. Withhis passion for applicable methods for design practices, Dr. Huang pursued advanced Ph.D. study at Indiana University, U.S. His dissertation investigated new approaches to describe and analyze interactive experience over time.

In 2015, Dr. Huang joined iNSIGHT, the Center for Innovation and Synergy for Intelligent Home and Living Technology, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. In his postdoctoral research, He continues investigating the theory and research approaches for long-term user experience and behavior changes. In the meantime, He also facilitates the design-driven innovation curriculum offered by iNSIGHT in NTU.

Dr. Huang holds a BS in industrial design from National Cheng-Kung University, and MFA in applied art from National Chao-Tung University. He is the recipient of government funded scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. Dr. Huang received his Ph.D. in informatics from the School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, U.S. His research has a strong focus in HCI, interaction design, and methodology for design practices, with publications in design and ACM SIGCHI sponsored conferences.
