Abstract

People have scarce attention. So are smartphone users. Research shows that smartphone users only pay intermittent attention on their phones. As a result, much research effort in mobile attention has been trying to manage scarce attention by minimizing the interruption of notifications to the users through detecting interruptible and opportune moments for sending notifications. However, while one person's attention may be scarce, aggregated attention is abundant and can be of great value if it is properly leveraged. In this talk, I present my current and future research work in managing smartphone users' attention when it is scarce. Then I move on to research focusing on leveraging aggregated attention to perform mobile crowdsourcing tasks such as collecting labeled data and information sharing.

 

 

Bio

Yung-Ju (Stanley) Chang is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Computer Science at the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. He received his M.S. (2009) and Ph.D. (2016) degree in Science of Information in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. In 2016, he was a Research Associate at the University of Michigan, and then he joined the National Chiao Tung University and led the Mobile and Ubiquitous Interaction Lab (MUI Lab). Stanley's main research interests lie in the intersection between Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a primary focus on supporting mobile communication and attention, mobile crowdsourcing, and city exploration. Recently he also starts to study human intelligence interaction and attention in Virtual Reality.
