Abstract:
The negative aspects of smartphone overuse on adolescents and young adults, such as sleep deprivation and attention deficits, are being increasingly recognized recently. While this problem domain has been largely explored by psychologists, I will show that HCI researchers can leverage advanced sensing and computing technologies to better understand the problem domain, and can design interactive software that can effectively mitigate negative aspects. In this talk, I will illustrate our recent work that analyzed the usage patterns related to smartphone overuse. We investigated smartphone usage for 95 college students using surveys, logged data, and interviews, and identified usage differences between risk and non-risk groups. This large scale data analysis led us to design novel intervention methods: 1) NUGU, a group based intervention app for improving self-regulation of limiting smartphone use through leveraging social support; and 2) Lock n’ Lol, an app that offers a mechanism to simultaneously lock multiple smartphones in order to encourage co-located social interactions. Then, I will discuss how our findings can be applicable to parental mediation of adolescents’ smartphone usage.

Bio:
Dr. Uichin Lee is an associate professor in the Department of Knowledge Service Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He received the B.S. in computer engineering from Chonbuk National University in 2001, the M.S. degree in computer science from KAIST in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in computer science from UCLA in 2008. He continued his studies at UCLA as a post-doctoral research scientist (2008-2009) and then worked for Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs as a member of technical staff until 2010. His research interests include social computing systems and mobile/pervasive computing.
