Abstract
Drug and alcohol has been used to restore health, energy, and vitality. It was popular to get recreational effects or the belief they were good medicine to cure physical and psychological problems. Nevertheless, it has been abused and addictiveness. Once the cycle of dependency or abuse has developed among users, it is difficult to interrupt it. The progression from legal to illegal substance use during adulthood may cause serious problems as well. No exception in Taiwan, the impact of alcohol use and abuse on health and society is huge and is found worldwide. This talk covers several studies to identify the role of social capital on substance using behaviors and health. In addition, the competing effect of alcohol metabolizing genes and social structures on subsequent substance use in early adolescence will be explored.
