Abstract

High-accuracy radio positioning technologies are critical for many applications, such as tracking patients in hospitals, recognizing behaviors in augmented reality, and locating victims in emergency calls. These techniques are expected to be the core technologies of the sixth-generation (6G) networks. However, they could be exploited to monitor a user's activities and habits and work as see-through wall tools, leading to a potential violation of individual rights. In this talk, we first talk about state-of-the-art radio positioning techniques. And then, we demonstrate a case of tracking without user consent in a restricted access building by developing a novel scheme of AI-empowered radio-based indoor surveillance. Experimental results show that the threat of monitoring a target user with up to centimeters of accuracy is real, even without the physical intrusion of the attacker. Given the vision of a ubiquitously connected world, we highlight the challenges and specific research topics to protect user privacy and prevent surveillance efforts in high-accuracy radio positioning-related technologies.
