Speaker: Dr. Hwai-Jung Hsu(許懷中博士)
Topic: A Data Scientist in Entertainment Industry: How Data Science Works in Gaming and Sport
Date : 13:20~15:00 Wednesday 2 Dec. 2015
Place : 105 Delta Building
Abstract:
Entertainment industry includes movie, music, gaming, and professional sports, etc. Its market continues growing, and globally reaches almost 2 trillion US dollars in 2015. The astonishing business of entertainment industry is on the basis of the fanaticism of global audience, fans, and gamers. To analyze the user behavior within entertainment experiences using data science to provide contents with higher entertainment and to sell more and more derivative products is now the key to further push the growth of entertainment industry.
In this talk, Dr. Hwai-Jung Hsu will elaborate how data science is adopted in analysis among online games and professional sports. He will talk about (1) the loyalty analysis of MMOG gamers; (2) the benefit analysis of virtual commodities; (3) the factors influencing the box office of professional sports; and (4) how to detect bots within MMOG with data analytics.
Through his sharing, the audience may understand how data science are empirically applied in industries. Besides, he also hopes that his experiences can inspire more talents to contribute themselves in data science.
Bio:
Dr. Hwai-Jung Hsu is now a post-doctoral fellow at Multimedia Networking and System Laboratory (MMNet Lab.), Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica. As a data scientist, he has more than three years of strong experiences in data analytics among various domains like online education, game industry, multimedia experiments, etc. Besides data science, his research interests also include cloud computing, psychophysiology, and object-oriented software engineering.
In recent years, Hwai-Jung fully cooperates with the members in MMNet Lab. and accomplishes various projects with his extraordinary data analytic skill. Using machine learning and crowd sourcing, he constructs a model to predict the sales of virtual commodities within an commercial published MMOG, and develops a system for quick evaluation of students for Junyi Academy. He also helps decision making in MMOG publishing for Gamania Digital Entertainment by predicting popularity of MMOGs using psychophysiology, and predicts the box offices of CPBL with open weather data and game statistics crawled from the CPBL official site. Dr. Hsu is now contributing himself bringing the data-driven culture into Taiwan industries, and wishes Taiwan may gain her own place in Big Data and IoT booming.
Hwai-Jung earned his Ph. D. from Institute of Computer Science and Engineering, National Chiao Tung University on August, 2011. He acquired his MS degree from Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Chiao Tung University in 2003, and his BS degree from Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Chiao Tung University in 2001.
